How do i get flight hours when i'm not old enough to have a pilots license?
I'm not old enough to have a pilots license yet, but i am old enough and have already qualified to take the FAA exam. Since i would like to get a private pilots license and i would like to get as many hours as possible to help qualify me for the air force academy I need to know what I need to do in order to get solo flight time as well as where i can do this. I need a place as close as possible to Long Beach, CA

fly with an instructor.

Are you at least 16? You can fly solo with a student pilot certificate, which is a Class 3 Medical. You can still log time with a CFI if you're not 16 yet. You might want to check out http://www.studentpilot.com I'm sure someone there could recommend a good flight school in your area.

You can fly with an instructor before you are 16 years of age however you won't be abke to fly solo till your 16. The hours you recieve with an instructor are counted as Dual Time and the hours you fly alone are called command time. They all add up in the end however it is best to get as much command time as possible so there is no point learning to fly until you are almost 16.

Here. Check this out. The civil air patrol takes kids as young as 12 I think. Good luck. http://www.cap.gov/

you don't need hours to apply to the academy from what i recall. They don't really look that that, just more as an extra curricular activity. Remember, the Air Force isn't just flying. Let's see, well, you are obviously 16 if you are elligble for the FAA exam. any younger and you'd have to be flying gliders. Ok, so what you need to do it go to torrance airport which is close to Long beach or go to Van Nuys. Which ever has a flight school. If van nuys isn't too far from where you live, it'll be fine. You basically want to get your "recreational pilot's license" if all you want is hours. what you are doing is really a waste of time, but if you really want to learn how to fly, it's not just "1,2,3" i'm done. You can't log Solo/pilot in command time unless an instructor signs you off for it. I started flying when i was 13, so i know what i'm talking about. I'm 18 now...got my license at 17. If you really want to learn how to fly, go for your private pilot's license, and make sure you have about 6-9 grand available to pay for it in 1 year. Also, to give you an idea about the airforce and flying, i had my pilot's license, eagle scout, and good grades, they didn't give me a scholarship. They gave my friend one who just had slightly better grades, and Eagle Scout. That's it. e-mail me if you want to start flying, and i'll get you hooked up with a program that someone in your area can help you more directly than i can. It's called AOPA project pilot. My e-mail is kflyer@gmail.com. Also, once you have your solo endorsement, do soemthing with it. Go fly around (within your comfort level) practice your landings and takeoffs and stuff that you don't need an instructor for. Then when you get your PVT license, the best thing to do is to get with a friend who is a pilot and "FLY SOMEWHERE" A good flight for you is to fly to KCRQ from VNY, or TOA. It's really simple, and it's a perfect cross-country with a lot of experience added to it.
