Take a newborn on an airplane or to the movies?
I want to fly back to Oklahoma after I have my son. I live in Long Beach, but my mom, brother and a lot of friends are in Oklahoma. How early can I take my son on a commercial flight. I worry about the air pressure and the germs. Also, if my fiance and I wanted to go to the movies and took our baby.... Again I worry about the germs and I also worry about the volume of the movie. Don't worry we would do matinees so we don't disturb anyone (if it's safe, that is). Should we or better, could we buy ear muffs to muffle the sound? Thanks for your help.

I took my 6 week old son to the movie's and he slept through the whole movie no earmuffs the noise did no bother him at all. I just was prepared that if he did start to cry we would leave so we did not disturb anyone else.

Ever worry about the other patrons when you go see the movie? Keep your newborn away from crowds until he's 2 months old, when he gets his first shots. There are too many germs that can prove deadly to him that I would not do it.

I wouldn't personally fly with my infant (or take them out of the house just because I wanted to go to the movies) until they were old enough to have had their first round of shots (which is 2 months old) and at that point the baby isn't a "newborn" anymore anyways. I am really paranoid about germs especially with it being flu season... my son is 3 months old and I've never taken him out just for the hell of it or becuase I had a selfish reason... I only take him with me to the grocery store if I have to because my husband is at work or something... other than that the only places he goes is with me to his grandparent's house or to my best friend's house... but I would still never take him to the movies... a baby does not belong at the movies. Get a babysitter. When my son was a newborn I didn't take him anywhere or let anyone touch or hold him without washing their hands first... I didn't start getting more lax about taking him out of the house until recently.

I personally wouldn't fly for a few months, but if you decide to fly it's no big deal. You can fly right away. The air pressure won't be bad as long as they have something like a pacifier to suck on (sucking/swallowing gets rid of the pressure on your ears). Germs are everywhere. You can't avoid them. It sucks, but that's the way it is unfortunately. And I wouldn't take a baby to the movies...for the sake of other movie-goers. No offense :)

i agree with you that it will be to germy. i would say that your baby should be at least 1-2 months old. (congrats on your new baby!) hope this helps!

I don't do the TV thing with my son at all, and I knew I wouldn't, so when he was 4-6 weeks old I took the benefit of the sleeping factor and brought him with me to the movies. We saw 4 different ones and he sat in the carseat the whole time, facing the seat, not the screen, and slept through it completely. All of them. After 6 weeks I haven't gone back with him. People will groan and moan at you when you walk in but when they see he slept they will say "good baby, good baby" over and over again I took a short flight, 2 hours, when he was 2.5 months old and again at 6 months and 7.5 months. He did great on all of those. When I flew from Japan to Chicago, a guy had his 1 month old baby girl on the plane. Any age for that is alright, but check the ears when you leave and when you get back with the doctor http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d181/maryjane_097/Takeo-Airplane04.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d181/maryjane_097/Takeo-Airplane05.jpg

Don't take your child to the movies, you never know if your child is going to like it and he may cry throughout the whole movie. The others around you will not like it, and I see it as a bit rude. And I wouldn't take your child out to the late shows either, way to late for them to be awake. You should be able to fly with your child, the cabins are pressurized, so their shouldn't be too much of a problem. As for the germs, they're everywhere, even in your own home. You can't really escape them, especially since we all have our own germs within our immune systems to fight off other pathogens.

i'd wait till he's had his first lot of immunization shots at 4mths and then i'd be able to be less worried about the germs etc. i took my 5mth old to the movies and he slept soundly throughout. Go to a day time viewing, and sit near the exit so if your baby makes a noise you and quickly leave and not disturb everyone else. Leave baby in the pram, so you can pull the sun viser over and drape blankets over to muffle the volume if you're worried.

No to the movies until the baby is 2 or 3. Any time before that, get a baby sitter. Not only will you and your child not enjoy it, by neither will the other paying patrons. I would personally wait until flu season is over. I was going to go see my brother graduate from boot camp, but when my parents decides to take a plane, I declined. A baby that young catching the flu could be really bad.

For the movies - a lot of theaters will do special matinees, where you can bring your babies. They set up special diaper tables and put the sound lower than usual. Phone around, see if any of your local theaters host these kind of events. For the flight - I would wait a month or two, make sure he has his shots, see his temperament (you don't want everyone hating you for being the one with the cranky baby). For the air pressure....well, you can bring a pacifier, because that will make him suck, and help with the pressure since he obviously doesn't know about the different ways adults do it. Germs would be like in any other public place, just keep some hand sanitizer around. You may also want to be careful because a lot of flights have restrictions as to how much liquid you're allowed on board. So if you'll be feeding by bottle.... I found some stuff on the web about flying too, that you could look at: http://www.babycenter.com/404_at-what-age-is-it-safe-for-my-baby-to-fly_7258.bc Congrats and best of luck!
